Why I Don’t Want to Be The Next Pat Flynn

Online IncomeI’ve been on line trying to make money for a little over 24 months, I ‘ve had a little bit of success, a lot more failure.  Since my week in the Philippines with the Empire Flippers guys, I been thinking about what I really want to do.

  • Am I trying to be the next successful blogger ?
  • Am I really trying to make money on line ?
  •  Am I just trying to learn some new skills, then just get bored with them ?

It’s  been an interesting thought process in the last few months.  It was actually at a dinner I was at the Philippines, where I actually started to think about what am I really trying to achieve being online.

We were all talking about what we were doing online.  and I actually heard myself, say, “I don’t really like trying to be a blogger, once I started to sell products, it made more sense to me, and it started to click”  Ok, maybe they weren’t my actually words, but it was the actually meaning of what I was saying.

So to answer the first question I have been asking myself, am I trying to be the next big successful blogger online.  Well the answer to that is no, I’m not.  It’s really easy to look at some one that is the at the pinnacle of success, and think that where I want/should be.

But the problem is

  •  I’m not them ( Are you one of them ?)
  • They had their own journey ?
  • Had their own skills ?
  • They had their own goals ?

I had to figure out, what I wanted for myself.  If I am going to blog at all then what’s my blogging purpose.  To be honest I think I am still trying to work that out.

Being a successful blogger takes a lot of hard work, you need to be consistent in your approach, you need to have passion about whatever your blogging about.  You need to be putting up kick ass content regularly, and you need to be promoting the hell out of it.

Easy when you look at it like that, harder when you think that could take years. For me, could I grow a big enough profile online, sure I most likely could.  I just don’t want to.

The second question is probably where I really have an interest.  Am I really trying to make money on line, Yes, Hell Yes..  I mean I have plenty of websites, some are making regular money, just not ENOUGH.

I can trade and make money (loose it as well).  I can buy shares and collect dividends.  I can sell products on line ( do this occasionally), I can sell services on line (I’m not doing this by the way).   There is plenty that I can do. There is something’s that I am doing, but just need to do a lot better.

For example, I did a website for a local business, that a friend owns about 18 months ago, I did it for nothing. Well I put up their website, they agreed to let me monetize it with Adsense.  It was a total of 5 posts with 9 pages, that site consistently earns money.  I mean it earns money every month, gets solid traffic every month.  If I could replicate that site, 50 times, I would be living on a beach in the Philippines.

Which brings, me to the last point, Am I just trying to learn some new skills.  Yes, I love learning new skills, I tend to get bored really quickly, I think it’s about know that I can do it then actually doing it.  Sort of like, those that can do , those that can’t teach.

So, if I have these cool  new skills, and I’m not really doing anything with it. You’d have to wonder why, It’s pretty simple I think.  I don’t have a big enough reason to do it.  Meaning, I’m not hungry enough for it or maybe I’m not motivated enough to go after it.

Sure wanting to make money online, is a fine reason.  But it also about the end goal for me,  Life style and more importantly Life design.

I’ve proven to myself that I can make money on line.  I just need to make more of it.  It should be a matter of, work out what works, then just continue do it, easy hey.

I really think, that if I or anyone wants to be successful, then setting your goals is important.  Mapping out a rough road map on how you will get there, then actioning that map, is pretty much the way to any success.

So, now what,  do I give up and wait for something else to come along. Do I keep doing what I am doing, or do I define my purpose, my goals and motivation.    So get serious about it I guess.   Start by defining the purpose of what I am doing on line, start making actionable goals,  break those goals down into actionable steps, then action them.

My purpose

Simple really, I want to be able to replace my 9 – 5 working income. So I can have the lifestyle I want. Which pretty much involves being able to afford to do the things that I really want to do in life.

My goals and Motivation

Well my goals, initially need to be designed to achieve my purpose.  So  I will set my self 3 goals.

  1. Earn $500 per month for 3 consecutive months.
  2. Sell  3 websites within 3 months.
  3. Achieve 1st page ranking for 5 keywords.

All pretty achievable really.  In the last few months, I’ve been working on learning how to get ranking for keywords, and I’ve been able to get first page, for a couple of websites and key words.  So to achieve goal 3, is probably the easiest.

Sell 3 websites, will take a bit of hard work, but I think really doable. I just need to really polish up a couple of sites then put them up on Flippa and see what I can do.

I earn regular money, but not consistent money.  I think goal 1 will be the hardest to do.  But if I achieve goals 1 and 2, I should be able to achieve point 1.

Actionable steps

Well now there is probably a lot I could do here.  but I will try to keep this simple.

  1. Generate content for the 3 sites I will put up for sale, and the additional sites I have
    1. Create original content
    2. Outsource content creation
  1. Ensure that I monetise the sites I want to sell, I want to be able to give value to whoever buys them.
  2. Broaden my own monetising methods on the sites I have.
  3. Continue to Link build to the sites that I have.
  4. Start a daily to do action list

It’s a pretty limited actionable steps list, but it’s the thrust of what I need to do.  I will really focus on no 5, on a day to day basic, I think that a could be a great method to help me stay focused, and improve my motivation.  There is nothing better than seeing , your efforts pay off with great results.

So, for the next 3 months, I will work my arse of to achieve my first 3 goals, by working the steps.  Should be interesting to see what I can do, in the next 3 months.  I will be documenting what I do,  I really want to start being a lot more thorough in my posting.

It’s about taking what I can do, and doing it better, and smarter.  I’m looking forward to seeing what I can really achieve.
