Creating a regular income with your website or blogging endeavors is a challenge, no doubt about it. There is just so much crap out there promising all types of things. To earn money online takes a lot. I wanted to look at the top 11 myths about how to earn money online, that I’ve learnt along that way.
Lets take a look at
11 Myths you need to know about how to earn money online
Myth #1 – It only cost $3.49 per month
OK this is just the silliest thing in the world. I see it time and time again, just so you understand it, No it does not cost $3.49 per month. At a bare minimum you will be paying this.
Domain – .com – $6.49 per year (first year)
Hosting – Shared hosting – $3.06 per month
Or to be more accurate something like this.
Add in content generation – $200 per month
Premium theme – $49.99 Once off
Starting a blog or website is easy and a low cost entry into potentially creating a steady passive stream. But please do not think for a minute that you will spend $10 and in the space of a 3 months be earning thousands of dollars.
To set your self up and to regularly earn money online will take investment from you. Both capital and time, if you can allocate either one to it and commit. Please don’t start, you mose well jump in a cold shower and start tearing up $100 bills.
Myth # 2 – You can replace your income in 3 months
You might also win lotto or get hit by a bus tomorrow. But the reality is it will take time and a lot of hard work. Read about changing your mindset here.
You should expect at least 9 – 12 months before you start to see earnings, once you understand how to earn your first dollar online. Then you replicate the process and speed up the efforts you are putting in.
If you can do that that money earned increases and the time that it takes to earn money decreases.
Myth # 3 – Anyone can do it
I’m sorry just cause your parents told you that you were special and could do anything. doesn’t mean that you can and will. This is a half and half scenario. Yes any one can create an online website or blog, honestly the technical stuff just isn’t that hard. If I can do it anyone can.
But not everyone will be able to start a website or blog and go on to earn thousands of dollars or even replace their income.
Nice thought, but be realistic.
A lot people struggle when it comes to the sweat equity needed to earn those fat stacks of cash.
Myth #4 – My blog is my business
Sorry, I disagree with people that think that their personal blog is a business. Sure there are plenty of example of people with personal blogs that earn great money. But what happens if those people stop blogging for whatever reason. Their online income will l slowly die.
Having a online business allows for some much more flexibility, being able to sell the online business as a going concern.
- Personal blog – Mummy blogs are a good example. Yes everyone loves looking at the latest photo fo junior eating a orange. But can you go and sell that ?
- Freelancing sites – Its all about how hard you can work for other people that earns you an online income.
- Online businesses – Drop shipping security technology products – A business that runs on process and advertising and can be onsold with out much problem at all.
Flippa is a great place to find these types of businesses, to buy or sell.
Myth #5 – 1 Hour a day and a laptop lifestyle.
This myth really annoys me. Being online and earning money is fantastic, it can really give you some freedom. Yes you can travel and still work. Really any place that has Wifi, can be your office.
But an hour a day I call bullshit on. People that have had success online, freely admit to working 40 plus hours per week, to maintain and grow their “laptop lifestyle business” and to earn money online.
It takes hard work people, something that I need to remind myself daily on when I slack of and start watching reruns of Friends.
While its called passive income, you really need to work for it.
Myth # 6 – You can set and forget.
Bahahaha, I wish. The online landscape chances frequently. Do not think for a moment that what worked for you yesterday will work for your tomorrow. To earn money online takes a regular concentrated effort, weather that blogging, online business or trading. Blink and you will miss it.
You need to be regularly trying to stay on top of the changes that are occurring.
Myth # 7 – One solid income source
If you take a look at the hundreds of income reports that are online, they have one thing in common. No one has just one solid income source.
To earn money online will come for many different sources. – affiliate sales, your own product launches, adsense, trading, share investing, you name it.
So take the time, to create and grow multiple legs to your online earnings.
Myth # 8 – If you build it that will come
This one reminds me of the movie A Field Of Dreams. Just creating a kick arse website or blog is not enough, you have to be regularly creating content and promoting it. Through multiple channels such as your email list, social media, SEO and PPC
Myth # 9 – Your wasting your time its all a scam
No, earning money online, is not a scam and you won’t waste your time. But you need to be practical and logical when you start out. There are no click a button an earn millions online options out there.
Its just not real, you will need to work really bloody hard at it to get your earnings up and off the ground.
Myth # 10 – All you need is a whiz bang “sales funnel”
Anyone with any idea of sales knows this is utter bullshit. You need so much more then a simple sales funnel. That’s certainly part of it, but you will be setting things up then tweaking and testing FOREVER.
This fits nicely into “passive” is not passive, maybe it should be called active income instead.
Myth # 11 – Buy this course for riches.
When I started out, I would hate to think of the amount of money I spent on courses that if I just spend some time googling I would of found the information for free. Yes it was a expensive education. Don’t get me wrong you do need to educate yourself, but you certainly don’t need to spend thousands doing it.
I suggest breaking down what you want to do into bite size pieces, the start researching it.
For example
- Creating more traffic – Plenty of amazing blogs out there that can give you great tips.
- Facebook ads – Again there are plenty of free information.
- Website set up – Again, but also make friends with the support department of your hosting provider.
- Youtube and Udemy has been a god send for me. You can learn anything you need to.
The Wash up
It simple to earn money online. You have so any opportunities out there now. So many different ways its almost to much. Just pick one strategy and give it your all. Better to try and fail then never try at all.
